Berlin is a city of charm, passion, finesse, and power. The city entrances the visitor with an abundant blend of appetites, mind frames, developments, and processes. Situated in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region, the capital is the largest city in Germany. Furthermore, Berlin is one of the main cultural, political, and scientific centers on the European Continent.

The city originated as a trading post during the 13th century. The Thirty Years War between 1618 and 1648 destroyed and depopulated Berlin. In 1701, Friedrich I of Prussia turned Berlin into a royal residence and a capital of the newly established state of Brandenburg-Prussia. Under the reign of Friedrich II, Berlin flourished as a cultural center and was sometimes called “Athens of the Spree”. The year of 1848 witnessed the unification of Berlin with the other German cities. During the Age of Industrialization, the city experienced rapid industrial growth and became a major scene for the German political life. Berlin was declared the capital city of the German Reich in 1871. The 1948 Blockade of Berlin and the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961 were the turning points of the Cold War. Three sections of the original wall are preserved nowadays. The reunification of 1990 turned the city into the capital of Germany.

Berlin boosts a vibrant cultural life and multiple historic and architectural landmarks. The city annual festivals are represented by the Karneval der Kulturen and the Berliner Festspiele, among others. In addition, Berlin holds many architectural monuments. The Reichstag stands for the first parliament building of the German Empire. The Brandenburg Tor is a monumental gate and the only surviving gateway of the former entrance points to Berlin. The Museum Island hosts the Old and the New Museums, the Old National Gallery, the Bode and the Pergamon Museums. This museum complex features the Pram’s Treasure, 19th century works of art, and Byzantine art collections. The Pergamon Museum displays the famous Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. Alexanderplatz stands for a large public square in the center of Berlin. Alex hosts the World Time Clock and the tallest hotel in Germany: Park Inn Berlin. In the Mitte district, the Nikolaiviertel is the oldest church of Berlin. Dedicated to Kaiser William I, Gedächtniskirche is a large neo-Romanesque church. Designed by Johann Bauman, the Berliner Dom represents a grandiose Baroque Cathedral. Further along, the Potsdamer Platz is a symbol of Berlin and one of the busiest traffic hubs in Europe. Finally, the Bebenplatz is a public square and the home of the State Opera, the Humboldt University, and St Hedwig`s Cathedral.
