Kensington Palace - Kensington Palace information and pictures

Kensington Palace was a mansion belonging to the Earl of Nottingham when King William III bought the house in 1689 and commissioned Christopher Wren to convert it into a royal palace. He built apartments for the King and Queen, the Chapel Royal and the Great Stairs and expanded the mansion. Queen Victoria was born and lived there as a child and there is a statue of her outside Kensington palace.

Diana, Princess of Wales used to live in Kensington Palace from 1981 to 1997. The palace is open to the public and there is a permanent display of Royal dresses and clothes worn by former Queens and Princess Diana.

Kensington Gardens became a public park in 1841. It is a popular spot for jogging and relaxation. A former tea pavilion is housing The Serpentine Gallery - a modern art gallery. A memorial playground dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales is a part of the Kensington gardens.
