The Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his lover Salome Alt. He wanted to have a perfect home for her and their 15 children, 10 of whom survived.
Once known as Altenau Palace it was renamed by Markus Sittikus to Mirabell Palace after the death of Wolf Dietrich. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich was forced to step down in 1612 and was held prisoner in
Hohensalzburg Fortress until his death.
Mirabell Palace is also known today for its famous marble hall considered to be the "loveliest wedding venue in the world".
The Mirabell Gardens are a beautiful sight with flowers and statues from the Greek mythology.
Today, Mirabell palace houses the offices of the mayor of
Salzburg and the town council.
