Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park - Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park guide, attractions and pictures
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is located in southern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The park was established in 1890 and is most famous for its giant Sequoia and Redwood trees in the Giant forest. The
General Sherman Tree is the largest tree on earth and probably the most famous. It measures 275 ft (84 m) tall and the trunk is 36ft (11 m) wide. You have to see it to believe it! The feeling to stand next to this giant sequoia is overwhelming.
The park is accessible by car and most people use the southern entrance near the town of
Three Rivers at Ash Mountain. The park rangers are very helpful. Be aware that during the late spring there could be snow and you will need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle or chains to get there. The road is maintained well but still it has a lot of sharp turns. The road has lookout points which offer splendid views over the mountains and the Kings Canyon and the Kings River.

Otherwise the majority of the park has hiking trails. Commonly seen wildlife is Mule deer, bobcats, foxes and Black Bear.
Some of the popular attractions are the
Tunnel Log – which is a tunnel under a fallen sequoia tree and the visitors can drive through it. The
Crystal Cave which is a marble cave accessible only by guided tours.
Moro Rock is a granite giant monolith which offers spectacular views of the Mountains and the Central Valley. Moro Rock is stricken by lightning very often so check the weather before you go there. The Giant forest and the giant sequoia trees are also an easy target for the lightning and some of them were hit not once - you will be able to see the fire scars on the trunks of the trees.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is about 225 miles (362 km) away from
Los Angeles.
