Tower Of London is more than 900 years old built by William the Conqueror in 1070. It was a prison and a place from where few people got out alive.
Tower Of London was built on the north bank of the river Thames very close to where
Tower Bridge is today. It has more than 20 towers.
The White tower was finished in 1097 and was the tallest building in
London at the time. It is 30 meters high. (90 ft).
The Tower green was where aristocratic prisoners were executed away from the crowds. Two of Henry VIII’s six wives were executed there.
The Beauchamp Tower is where high-ranking prisoners were held with their servants.
Medieval Palace was created in 1220 by Henry III. His son Edward I added Traitors’ gate from where prisoners entered the Tower by boat.
Inside the Tower are kept the
Crown Jewels. They are impossible to price because they have historic and religious importance. Most of them date from 1661 when a new set was made for the coronation of Charles II. 10 crowns are on display at the tower. The Imperial State crown contains more than 2800 diamonds, 273 pearls and other gems and the queen wears it frequently. The crown was made for George VI in 1937. Other jewels in the collection include The Sovereign’s ring, the Plate collection, The Sceptre with the cross, The Orb.
