Among the Greek islands, Crete is supposed to be the largest. Crete also ranks the fifth amongst the islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It occupies an area of 3.219 square miles. Crete has an important position in the economic as well as the cultural heritage of the nation Greece. Though Crete has its own dialect and music, the residents like to be identified as Greeks. The capital of Crete is Heraklion.

Brief history - The earliest settlements in this area date to the period which is approximately before 6000 BC, called the aceramic era of the Neolithic culture. They were the people engaged in farming and rearing cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. The ancient civilization of Europe called the Minoan civilization owes its origin in Crete. The early history of Cretans has mention of legends of King Minos, Minotaur, Theseus, Icarus, and Daedalus. Crete had a part to play in the Mithridatic Wars. It was initially successful in repelling the Romans in 71 BC. However subsequently, Crete was captured by Rome during the period 69 BC. At this time the capital of Crete became Gortyn.

Crete came to be conquered by Iberian Muslims under the leadership of Abo Hafs Omer Al-Baloty. In 960, the area was again captured by Nicephorus Phocas. It again remained under Byzantine rule till 1204, when the Venetians came to establish control over the region. During this era the island witnessed a period of Renaissance. Lot of artistic creations took place during this time. During the period 1574 -77, Giacomo Foscarini, the Proveditor General ruled over Crete who displayed absolute intolerance towards the non – Catholics. Later it was the Ottomans who captured Crete in 1669. During this era several churches were transformed to mosques. Several Christian uprisings happened between 1833 and 1897. Ultimately Crete became a part of Greece on December 1, 1913.

Climate - Crete lying in between two regions, the Mediterranean and the North African has influence of both areas. However the climate here is predominantly temperate. The area experiences mild winter. However snow fall is a common phenomenon in the mountains which this area is famous for. Some areas with proximity to the sea experience quite a lot of humidity in summer.

• Samaria Gorge: This is one of the biggest canyons in Europe. This place is home to an uncommon species called “kri kri goat”. The region is ideal for dedicated hikers.
• Knossos: This place contains the ancient remains of the famous Minoan Civilization.
• Spinalonga: This is an island situated east of Crete and had been a thoroughfare of the leper colony of Europe.
• Vai Beach: It has got an actual Caribbean feel and remains very crowded during peak season.
• Botanical Park of Crete: This is an ideal place for hiking with beautiful nature trails.
