New York Public Library was built on the site of the Croton Reservoir more than 100 years ago. It was designed by the relatively unknown firm of Carrère and Hastings. The New York Public Library is a large marble building in Beaux-Arts style and was finally finished in 1910.

The building ia filled with Corintian colums and allegorical statues. Two majestic marble lions prodly stand before the building. They even have nicknames Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, after the NYPL founders John Jacob Astor and James Lenox. During the great depression they were named Patience and Fortitude for the qualities New Yorkers needed to survive the toughest times.

The Main Reading Room was restored in 1998 and is a marvelous space with large windows and beautiful ceiling. The New York Public Library has 2 million card holders.
