The Dakota - The Dakota information and pictures



The Dakota is one of the most famous apartment buildings in Manhattan. The Dakota was built between 1880 and 1884 and was designed by Edward Clark. The building has distinctive architecture with deep roofs, gables, balconies and oriel windows. When the Dakota was built this part of Manhattan was still remote location but soon started to attract residents and today it is a legendary landmark in New York City.

The Dakota is a square shaped building with lovely courtyard. The apartments are designed to face 2 sides of the building – the bedrooms face the street and the service rooms and kitchen face the courtyard. The apartments at the Dakota building are huge, some of them with 14 ft high ceilings.

The building is best known for its famous residents and John Lennon and Yoko Ono in particular. John Lennon was shot dead near the entrance of Dakota building on 8, December 1980. Yoko Ono still lives here. A lot of famous people lived in the Dakota building including Roberta Flag, Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, Paul Simon. Madonna wanted to buy an apartment here but was turned down by the board.

The Dakota building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
